OUR PROJECT
The Problem
-
Soil degradation caused by overgrazing
-
Destruction of forest trees caused by grazing in the Mau forest
-
Persistent drought caused by less tree cover.
-
Depending on livestock as the only source of income.
The Solution
i. Planting boma Rhodes grass for all-season fodder.
ii. Planting Trees on part of land remaining after planting grass for fodder.
iii. Harvesting of the regenerated seeds for income
iv. Bailing of the hay for future use and sale excess for income
The Impact
i.70,000 acres of land is now covered with grass
ii.We have planted 1,500,000 trees in rural areas
iii.We have successfully stopped 70% grazing in Mau Forest
iv.The Maasai community is currently earning income from sale of both boma Rhodes grass seeds and Hay
v.We are currently exporting seeds to Uganda
The Opportunity
